History

In a previous life, the Old School House was a photographic processing laboratory
In 1833 a Parliamentary Grant was made to the two voluntary school societies in Wallasey… The National Society and the British and Foreign Schools Society. In 1839 the first elementary school in Wallasey was opened and was located in the Old School House. The School was connected with St John’s Parish Church at the top of Church Street until 1894. By then the School had become inadequate for the number of pupils at the school and was closed when new buildings were available. St Mary’s Church had a small school attached to it but this too was in need of more space. These classes were transferred to the Old School House and were thereafter known as St Mary’s School until its closure shortly after the First World War.

The building was a school for over 100 years and since then has had many uses including a photographic processing facility for Graham Reid's Photos Limited who had their main retail premises next door. This business became the famous Max Spielmann Ltd, who used the building as their head office for many years and later as a warehouse.

Please note the misspelling of the date stone. This was discovered once the building had been sandblasted clean.
